Background
Gender-based violence is a worldwide phenomenon and in many parts of the world there are campaigns against rape culture in particular.  In June 2020 governors of 36 Nigerian states declared a state of emergency following a spate of sexual violence against women.  There are civil society organizations in Africa and in the Diaspora that have taken up the challenge against ‘rape culture.’ The speakers at this ASG event voice their thoughts in this important dialogue on our cultural attitudes towards sex.

The panelists
Cherral (Cherry) Isa is based in Toronto where she manages and oversees the projects undertaken by The Consent Workshop.

Omolara was the director of human rights and advocacy at The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERS) in Lagos, and is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria.

Oluwaseun founded the Stand to End Rape Initiative and last year, in collaboration with the BBC, produced the undercover “Sex for Grades” video about universities in
Ghana and Nigeria.

Karyn has an MPA from the University of Manitoba. Before the Red Cross she worked for Geneva Call in Myanmar to promote respect for international humanitarian norms and principles, and for the global child rights network in Thailand. She also volunteers with a Canadian organization working to protect children from sexual exploitation.

Le sujet:

La violence basée sur le genre est un phénomène mondial; plusieurs régions ont maintenant des campagnes contre la culture du viol en particulier. En juin 2020 les gouverneurs de 36 états nigérians ont proclamé un état d’urgence suite à une explosion de violence contre des femmes. Il y a des organisations de la société civile en Afrique et dans la diaspora qui ont entamé la lutte contre cette culture du viol. Les participantes à cette rencontre du GRA vont offrir leurs perspectives dans le cadre de ce dialogue important au sujet de nos attitudes culturelles sur les questions sexuelles.

Omolara a été la directrice pour les droits de la personne et de soutien à The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIERS) à Lagos, et en ce moment est candidate pour une maîtrise en droits de la personne et en démocratisation en Afrique au Centre de droits de la personne à l’Université de Pretoria.

Oluwaseun a fondé la Stand to End Rap Initiative et, l’an passé, a collaboré avec la BBC pour réaliser le vidéo clandestin «Sex for Grade » sur les universités au Ghana et au Nigeria.
