Biography:
Lise Filiatrault is the Assistant Deputy Minister for Sub-Saharan Africa Branch since November
- Prior to that, Mme Filiatrault held various positions at the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA) between 1990 and 2013, at which point CIDA and DFAIT merged.
Between May 2010 and October 2013, she was Regional Director General for the Americas, with
responsibilities for the Canadian international development programs in Latin America and the
Caribbean. Prior to taking this position, she served as acting Regional Director General for the
Europe, Middle East and Maghreb Directorate for almost a year. She was Director General for
the Europe Division from April 2008 to June 2009 and managed the Russia, Ukraine, Balkans
and Europe Regional Programs. From September 2005 to March 2008, she held the position of
Director, Middle East Division, which included responsibilities for Lebanon, Jordan, West Bank
and Gaza, UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Agency in the Near East) and
Palestinian refugees.
Ms Filiatrault had many overseas postings, notably as Head of the Cooperation Program in Cuba
(2002-2005) and in Chile (1996-2000) where she was also responsible for programs in Argentina,
Uruguay and Paraguay. She also served at the Canadian High Commission in Guyana from 1992
to 1994.
Prior to joining CIDA in 1990, Ms Filiatrault worked for two Canadian NGOs where the focus of
her work was West Africa. She studied at Ottawa University (Graduate Studies Diploma in
International Development and Cooperation) and at Université du Québec à Montréal (Bachelor
in Biology / Ecology).
