The global awareness of the impact of COVID on many African countries has focused attention on the lack of availability of current vaccines. Compounding this problem, the travel ban imposed on South Africans and nationals of nine other African countries caused enormous consequences to the economies of the region but also clouded crucial scientific achievements in testing, vaccine development and production, in addition to strides made in continental cooperation. The panelists address the global challenges of Covid-19 from a South African perspective.

Mia Malan has 25 years of experience as a journalist. She is presently Bhekisisa’s editor-in-chief and executive director. Under her leadership, Bhekisisa: Centre for Health Journalism’s online readership increased 30-fold and its donor funding eightfold between 2013 and 2019. Malan has won more than 20 African journalism awards for her work and is a former fellow of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University. |

Dr. Sanjay Ruparelia holds Ryerson University Faculty’s inaugural Jarislowsky Democracy Chair. His research addresses the politics of democracy, equality and development in the postcolonial world, as well as the role of parties, movements and institutions in politics. Prior to the New School, Ruparelia was assistant director of the South Asia Institute, a lecturer at Columbia University, and served as a consultant to the United Nations. |

Fatima Hassan is a South African human rights lawyer. She’s the founder of and heads the newly established Health Justice Initiative in South Africa and is the former executive director of the Open Society Foundation for South Africa. She has a BA and LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand and an LLM from Duke University. She’s the former co-director and founding Trustee of Ndifuna Ukwazi and previously served on the Boards of the Raith Foundation, SA Medecins Sans Frontieres, Doctors Without Borders (MSF-SA), the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition and the South African Council for Medical Schemes. She’s currently serving on the board of Global Witness. She also is the host of a special COVID-19 and IP related podcast called Access. |
| Shireen Hassim is Canada 150 Research Chair in Gender and African Politics at the Institute of African Studies, Carleton University. She is also associated with the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of the Witwatersrand University. Her PhD is from York University, Toronto. |  |

La sensibilisation mondiale à l’impact du COVID dans de nombreux pays africains a mis en évidence le manque de disponibilité des vaccins en cours. Pour exacerber ce problème, l’interdiction de voyager imposée aux Sud-Africains et aux ressortissants de neuf autres pays africains a eu d’énormes conséquences sur les économies de la région, tout en compromettant des avancées scientifiques cruciales en matière de tests, de développement et de production de vaccins, ainsi que les progrès réalisés en matière de coopération continentale. Les intervenants d’aujourd’hui abordent les défis mondiaux à relever dans le cadre de Covid 19 d’un point de vue sud-africain.

Sanjay Ruparelia est titulaire de la première chaire Jarislowsky sur la démocratie de la faculté de l’Université Ryerson. M. Ruparelia est actuellement professeur agrégé de politique à la New School for Social Research, basée aux États-Unis. Ses recherches portent sur les politiques de démocratie, d’égalité et de développement dans le monde postcolonial, ainsi que sur le rôle des partis, des mouvements et des institutions en politique. Avant d’entrer à la New School, M. Ruparelia a été directeur adjoint du South Asia Institute, chargé de cours à l’université de Columbia et consultant auprès des Nations unies. |
