May Chazan started at Trent as a Canada Research Chair in Gender and Feminist Studies and a faculty member in Gender and Women’s Studies in 2013. She is inspired by how social justice movements form, operate, and generate change and by how, across enormous differences in power, privilege, and worldview, alliances are forged and maintained. With longstanding interests in gender, aging, and intergenerational solidarities, she is particularly intrigued by the roles older women play in these activist coalitions. She then did her MA (2003-05) and PhD (2005-11) at Carleton, with the support of a Trudeau Foundation Scholarship, and held a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto (2011-13).

REMINDER: The Stephen Lewis Foundation presents

“The Ask Her Talks: African women on philanthropy, change and power”

We are delighted to invite you to attend the inaugural Ask Her Talks in Ottawa on May 28th.

Ottawa Ask Her Talks

Thursday, May 28, 2015

Kailash Mital Theatre

Carleton University

7:00 pm – Reception to follow

Tickets: $20

It’s time to shift the conversation — to challenge our understanding and beliefs about how philanthropy can truly improve the human condition.

There are remarkable leaders in Africa at the community level. Women are at the heart of the response to AIDS, are overwhelmingly the frontline health care workers, are tackling the epidemic of sexual violence — and yet we rarely, if ever, hear from them. African women are leading the way, and are experts on what works, what kind of support is most effective, and what challenges need to be met.

Five dynamic African women will speak about what happens when crises strike — such as the AIDS pandemic, Ebola, the kidnapping of Nigerian girls, and sexual violence in conflict — and the role that philanthropy should now play in a transformative response.

KUWALA (African Academy of Languages) Journal: Call for Papers

The African Academy of Languages (ACALAN) invites Africa scholars in the continent and the Diaspora to submit contribution for publication in a special edition of KUWALA (ACALAN’s Journal), which will explore the academic, conceptual and practical elements on the contribution of African languages to the Agenda. It is to be noted that language in general and African languages in particular have been generally excluded from the development discourse. The special edition, therefore, provides scholars with a rare opportunity to provide inputs that will bring Africa languages to the core of Africa’s Agenda 2063.

ACALAN’s Secretariat will accept submissions in African languages and all working languages of the African Union. The deadline for the submission of papers is June 2015 each contributor will make arrangement for collection of his/her copy of the journal after publication.

The contribution should be sent to kuwala@acalan.org; bjohnson@acalan.org; ldampha@aclan.org .

CALL FOR PAPERS – Rhythms of Life: Youth and Popular Culture in a Changing South Africa

13-14 November 2015, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town

Rhythms of Life: Youth and Popular Culture in a Changing South Africa is a two day symposium organized by the Human Sciences Research Council, the University of Helsinki’s discipline of Social and Cultural Anthropology, and the University of the Western Cape’s Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research. It is an interdisciplinary symposium that encourages contributions from across the social sciences and humanities.

South African youth are in a unique and challenging transitory space that presents continuities with the past, yet simultaneously offering a moment in which new and different ways of being and doing are possible. How do young people engage this new, transitory space with all its contradictions? What are the tools that they use and the channels that they navigate to create alternatives? What are the contemporary cultural and linguistic practices that signify the ‘breaks from the past’ yet encourage social solidarities and create alternative imaginings of being South African?

This symposium is open to the analysis of all aspects of the relationship between youth and popular culture in South Africa, and we particularly welcome papers addressing:

– Youth, social identities and difference

– Youth, social solidarities and resistance

– Youth, social media and new technologies

– Youth, consumerism and popular culture

The closing date for the submission of abstracts is the 31 May 2015. Please send a 200 word abstract and 50 word academic biography to bmoolman@hsrc.ac.za.

Acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to presenters by 30 June 2015
