The Institute of African Studies presents a book launch and a film concerning President Obama and Kenya on Friday, October 14th at 2:30pm in 2017 Dunton Tower.

First, there will be a book launch and discussion of Obama and Kenya: Contested Histories and the Politics of Belonging by Matthew Carotenuto and Katherine Luongo (2016, Ohio University Press) with Matthew Carotenuto ( associate professor of History and coordinator of African Studies, St. Lawrence University).

Nigeria 56th Independence Day Party

You are invited to celebrate Nigeria’s 56th Independence Day with other Nigerians and Friends of Nigeria on October 1st at the prestigious WHITE HOUSE RESTAURANT at 4049 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario from 7pm (doors open) – 1am

Since the tragic killing of Abdirahman Abdi by Ottawa police on July 24th 2016, black community mobilizers in the Ottawa area have put together a number of events remembering his life and demanding equity, accountability and transparency in the legal processes following his death . Grassroots activism has propelled since his death through the consistent work of the Justice for Abdirahman Coalition (justiceforabdirahman.ca) As a response to his death, we will host a community conference on Sunday October 2nd to discuss and share knowledge around anti-blackness, state sanctioned violence, mental health, xenophobia and the number of ways these topics intersect. A consensus community response document will be generated from the perspectives and knowledge gathered at the conference. This consensus document which will be published on the Justice for Abdirahman Coalitions website.

Conférence-débat: Les jeunes racialisés & le système judiciaire Canadien

  • Soucieuses du bien-être et du développement psychosomatique de nos jeunes, deux femmes professionnelles, dynamiques, bénévoles chevronnées et déterminées, ont pris l’initiative d’organiser une conférence-débat intitulée : Les jeunes racialisés & le système judiciaire Canadien.

    Leur objectif est de brosser, entre autres, la réalité actuelle des jeunes issus de communautés ethnoculturelles, faisant face au système judiciaire Canadien, auquel cas, elles souhaitent apporter des suggestions d’améliorations aux programmes existants, à la démystification dudit système aux parents.

    Plusieurs personnalités provinciales, dont le chef de la police d’Ottawa, le Procureur général de l’Ontario, des ambassadeurs, des organismes et représentants de centres communautaires, etc. feront ?partis de nos convives.

    Venez toutes et tous supporter l’événement et interagir avec nos conférenciers le 14 Octobre 2016, à 18h, au Complexe St-Laurent, sis au 525 Coté St, Ottawa, ON K1K 0Z8.

Call for Applications- GraceKennedy Jamaican Birthright Programme

The GraceKennedy Foundation is currently accepting applications for the GraceKennedy Jamaican Birthright Programme, to be held from 1st July 2017 to 8th August 2017.

The programme is a one (1) month cultural and professional internship, geared towards University students and will highlight all aspects of Jamaican life while furthering the career goals of the selected candidates. It is designed to reconnect second and third generation Jamaicans to their Jamaican heritage. Candidate must have a Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above (i.e. B average or higher).

GraceKennedy will cover airfare, housing, transportation and stipend for the selected candidates.

Call for Applications-African Leaders of Tomorrow (ALT) Scholarship Program

The African Leaders of Tomorrow (ALT) Scholarship Program commemorates the late Nelson Mandela’s commitment to social justice and equity. It supports young African professionals to become leaders in public policy and administration.

Call for applications-Junior Fellowship at Engineers without Borders

Engineers Without Borders creates change by supporting social innovations in Canada and Africa that can break the systems that sustain poverty. We promote policies to foster more equitable development. We invest in leaders who enable others to reach their full potential.

Carleton’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders is looking for a young leader who is passionate about international development and investing in others. The Junior Fellowship is an 18-month internship involving a 4-month work placement in the Summer of 2017 and involvement and leadership within the chapter at Carleton before and afterwards.The program is at no cost to the successful applicant, it takes place during the summer so they aren’t required to take time off school, and they can be in any program of study. This is an excellent opportunity for personal growth and overall a really amazing internship with a Canadian NGO working in international development!
