The Africa Study Group is happy to announce its first event of the 2019-2020 season, a panel on the outlook for Ethiopia, given the many changes in the last 18 months.
Time: Thursday September 26th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Place: Colonel By Room, Ottawa City Hall, 110 Laurier Ave West
The panel will be moderated by Tag Elkhasin, Carleton, who will give some background on existing Ethiopian constitutional arrangements. The panel will include:
-Sosina Besu is a Senior Researcher at the Christian Michelsen Institute (Bergen, Norway) and a specialist in development economics and applied econometrics. She has published on issues such as rural livelihood, land policy, migration, youth employment and women’s empowerment in leading development studies and development economics journals.
– Hone Mandefro Belaye, Concordia University “Reform under a Coalition of Ethnic Nationalist Parties: rhetoric and reality”
– Logan Cochrane, Carleton University and Hawassa University, Ethiopia “Pressures on the existing decentralized federation”
Tag Elkhasin is Adjunct Professor at the Institute of African Studies, Carleton and member (and Senior Outreach Co-ordinator) of the ASG’s Steering Committee.
Sosina Besu is a Senior Researcher at the Christian Michelsen Institute (Bergen, Norway) and a specialist in development economics and applied econometrics. She has published on issues such as rural livelihood, land policy, migration, youth employment and women’s empowerment.in leading development studies and development economics journals.
Hone Mandefro Belaye is a PhD candidate in the Social and Cultural Analysis program in the Sociology and Anthropology Department at Concordia. Before moving to Montreal (first as a Jeanne Sauvé Foundation Fellow at McGill) Hone worked at the University of Gondar in Ethiopia. He is a regular commentator on Ethiopian politics and has published in Addis Standard and Ethiopia-Insight.
Logan Cochrane is an Assistant Professor at Carleton University (Global and International Studies) and an Adjunct Professor at Hawassa University, Ethiopia (Institute of Policy and Development Research). Logan has worked in Ethiopia since 2006 and edited “Ethiopia: Social and Political Issues”, published this month (September 2019).
And as an advanced notice, the following event will be on Cameroon on Thursday, October 3, at the usual time but at 270, boulevard des Allumettières in Gatineau

Le Groupe de réflexion sur l’Afrique est heureux d’annoncer sa première rencontre de la saison 2019-2020, un panel sur les perspectives pour l’Éthiopie, compte tenu des nombreux changements qui ont été amorcés depuis 18 mois.

Le panel sera animé par Tag Elkhasin, Carleton, qui donnera une courte explication du système constitutionnel actuel. Le panel comprendra :

Tag Elkhasin est professeur auxiliaire à l’Institut des études africaines à Carleton et membre (et coordinateur sénior de rayonnement) du Comité directeur du GRA.
Sonia Bezu est chercheuse principale à l’Institut Christian Michelsen (Bergen, Norvège) et spécialiste en économie de développement et en économétrie appliquée. Elle a publié dans les revues principales des études de développement et de l’économie du développement sur des sujets tels moyens de subsistance ruraux, politique foncière, migration, emploi des jeunes et l’autonomisation des femmes.
Hone Mandefro Belaye est doctorant au programme d’analyse sociale et culturelle au département de sociologie et anthropologie, Concordia. Avant de venir à
Montréal (initialement comme fellow de la fondation Jeanne-Sauvé à McGill) il a travaillé à l’Université de Gondar en Éthiopie. Il publie régulièrement sur
la politique éthiopienne; ses commentaires ont paru dans Addis Standard et Ethiopia Insight.
Logan Cochrane est professeur adjoint des études mondiales et internationales à Carleton et professeur auxiliaire à l’Institut de recherche en politique et en développement de l’université Hawassa en Éthiopie, Logan travaille en Éthiopie depuis 2006 et vient de diriger la publication de “Ethiopia: Social and Political Issues”, paru ce mois-ci (septembre 2019).
