Title: From security Issues in the Sahel to the Dynamics of Armed Tuareg Groups in Mali

The increasing strength of jihadist groups in the years after 2000, the Tuareg rebellion begun in Mali in 2012 and the growing tensions between and within communities in recent years are key factors behind the growing importance of the security situation in the Sahel-Sahara region to the international political agenda. With this starting point, the presentation will try to describe the dynamic relationships between the different armed groups in the most recent Malian conflict, in order to explain the challenges they pose for the stabilization of the region. It will endeavour to put in perspective the objectives, strategies, relative strengths and self-images of the different groups present, in particular within the broader Tuareg community, in order to suggest possible future directions for Mali and for the broader region.

GRITE is issuing a call for abstracts to graduate students to participate in a conference May 7 to 9, 2018 (exact date to be confirmed) at the University of Ottawa. The focus of the conference is to critically examine governance of resource extraction, at multiple levels, as well as the innovative ways in which various actors are thus engaged.

We want to turn your PhD research into a 54-minute radio show on www.cbc.ca/ideas. It would be part of our regular feature on the program called “Ideas from the Trenches.”

In a page or less, tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired your interest in your area of study. Describe the focus of your PhD and why it would appeal to a national audience, and outline a few of the key theorists, authors and concepts your PhD explores and challenges. We would like your submission by January 30, 2018. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in a background interview to explain to us more about your thesis, and then participate in three recording sessions for the documentary itself. Please note that you can be at any stage of the PhD process (including questioning whether you still plan to finish!).

Pierre Kwenders 2018 Concert
Afro-Canadian singer/songwriter Pierre Kwenders’ music is a response to a world that so often asks people who fit comfortably in multiple boxes to pick only one. While Pierre’s music ranges from icy R&B to futuristic hip-hop, his style is rooted in Congolese rumba, the ubiquitous sound of The Democratic Republic of Congo.
His new full-length album released on September 2017 produced entirely by Seattle-based Fly Guy Dai (aka Tendai Maraire of Shabazz Palaces), this new album pivots from Bantou’s housey thump to something more instrumental, incorporating strong African influence and old-school West Coast hip-hop vibes into Kwenders unique recipe.
