Call for Applications Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) – Women’s and Gender Studies

The Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment in Women’s and Gender Studies with a specialization inCritical Race Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2020. The Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies offers a graduate MA in Women’s and Gender Studies, undergraduate degrees in Women’s and Gender Studies, and minors in Sexuality Studies and Disability Studies. As part of the recent addition of Sexuality Studies and Disability Studies to the Institute, we are seeking scholars who can help foster the growth of intersectional pedagogy and institution building both within the Institute, including plans for a possible Critical Diversity Studies initiative, and through connections with departments and programs such as the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies, the Institute of African Studies, Childhood and Youth Studies, Human Rights and Social Justice, Migration and Diaspora Studies, and Global and International Studies. https://carleton.ca/womensstudies/ 

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Women’s and Gender Studies or related field, with evidence of strong potential for innovative and intersectional scholarly research and pedagogy in critical race studies and other interdisciplinary areas central to feminist research. Additional expertise in any of the following areas would be especially welcome: disability studies, Indigenous studies, African studies, and/or transnational and diaspora studies. The candidate should have demonstrated aptitude for teaching core courses in women’s and gender studies, sexuality studies, and/or disability studies and evidence of ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment.

Call for Applications | Canada Research Chair in Black Studies

The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University invites applications for nomination to a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Black Studies. Applicants can be external to York University or tenured faculty with a current appointment in a LA&PS-based Department or School. The deadline for receipt of applications for this position is August 31, 2019. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

Black Studies includes but is not strictly limited to scholars who work in any of the following areas: Black History, Black Culture, Black Literature, Black Diaspora Studies, Black Critical Thought, or who explore the political and economic conditions of black people locally, globally, or in comparative perspective.

The successful candidate must have a PhD in an area relevant to the field of Black Studies in which they work. Nominees for Tier 1 Chair positions must also be Full Professors or Associate Professors who are expected to be promoted to the Full Professor level within one or two years of the nomination.

The successful candidate will also be required to work with the support of the Office of Vice President Research and Innovation to prepare the full nomination package for submission to the Canada Research Chairs Secretariat in the Fall.

Vacancy | Assistant Director Position

The Kansas African Studies Center Assistant Director is a full-time program coordinator who works with the Director on program planning and execution (academic projects, community events, K-16 outreach, etc.), fund raising, grant preparation and administration, and communication to various constituencies in different mediums, print and electronic. The KASC Assistant Director reports to the KASC Director and works with support staff in the Shared Service Center of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and in the main office shared with the Centers for Global and International Studies and East Asian Studies.

The search committee actively encourages applications from members of groups underrepresented in higher education who can contribute to the climate of diversity at KU. The Kansas African Studies Center is a federally-funded Title VI National Resource Center for African Studies with over 30 core faculty members and an additional 70 affiliated faculty and staff across the Lawrence campus. The Center works to promote the study of African languages offered through the Department of African & African-American Studies (AAAS) at KU.

Call for Application | 2019-2023 PhD Fellowship

The University of Ghana has received funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York, USA, to implement a project titled “Enhancing Doctoral Training in the Humanities” at University of Ghana (ENDoTH@UG) from the 2019-2023 academic year. The purpose of the project is to support doctoral training in the Humanities.

The focus of the fellowship is on the following disciplines/units:

  1. Languages (including English, Linguistics, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Kiswahili and Russian);
  2. Arts (including Philosophy and Classics, Archaeology and Heritage Studies, the Study of Religions and History);
  3. Performing Arts (including Dance, Music and Theatre Arts);
  4. African Studies

Eligibility

An applicant for the PhD Fellowships:

  1. Should hold an MPhil Degree in any of the disciplines listed above, or in a related field.
  2. Should have excellent academic credentials and demonstrate commitment to pursue an academic career.

MPhil students who have submitted their theses are encouraged to apply.

Call for Application | 2020-2021 Fellowship Program

The Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study offers research fellowships to scholars working on projects that engage with questions of ethics, value, meaning, or purpose. The NDIAS supports research in all disciplines, including the arts, engineering, humanities, law, and formal, natural, and social sciences. As a residential research community, NDIAS Fellows live and work at the University of Notre Dame and present their research in weekly discussion seminars, attend Institute-supported programming, and participate in the intellectual life of the university. The Institute seeks outstanding scholars who are working on projects that can benefit from the collaborative, interdisciplinary setting it provides.

In response to new and emerging opportunities, the NDIAS has added a thematic option to its call for fellowship applications for academic year 2020-2021. The NDIAS is particularly interested in fostering interdisciplinary study of the nature of trust, with a broad range of perspectives, topics, and methods. Fellowship applications are encouraged from all eligible scholars and scientists whose work engages the theme and who are interested in advancing their project through interdisciplinary reflection, discussion, and collaboration at the NDIAS.

Research Fellow – Global Soldiers (Angola)

The University of Sussex is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to work on a Leverhulme Trust funded project, ‘Global Soldiers in the Cold War: Making Southern Africa’s Liberation Armies’.

The successful candidate will join a team of researchers spanning Oxford and Sussex. The post will carry out oral historical and ethnographic research on veterans of Angolan liberation movement armies under the direction of the CI (based in Sussex), will collaborate and publish with other team members, and undertake other tasks as directed.

The post entails significant field research within Angola, as well as a majority of time spent in the UK analyzing and writing, plus international travel to present findings at conferences.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in a relevant discipline as well as experience and language skills necessary for fieldwork in Angola. They will have a demonstrable record of publication in academia.

Research Officer – Global Soldiers in the Cold War: Making Southern Africa’s Liberation Armies

Salary: Grade 7 starting at £33,199 and rising to £39,609 per annum  

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Officer carrying out research for the Leverhulme Research Project , which will produce histories of cold-war era ‘global soldiers’, focused on southern Africa’s liberation armies and their Soviet interlocutors. The project will use the life stories of rank-and-file veterans, and produce book-length studies as well as scholarly articles. The post is full-time, for 3 years, commencing 1 January 2020, and is based at the Oxford Department of International Development.

You will hold, or be close to completion of, a relevant PhD/DPhil in history, anthropology, politics or a cognate discipline, together with relevant research experience. 

The postholder will carry out oral historical and ethnographic research on Soviet veterans of southern Africa’s Cold-War era wars under the direction of the PI, Professor Jocelyn Alexander. S/he will collaborate and publish with other team members, and undertake other tasks as directed.

The Queen’s Africa and Diaspora Group presents the Queen’s Africa and Diaspora (QAD) Conference. QAD Conference 2019 welcomes abstracts on all topics from a multidisciplinary and global perspective that contributes to sustainable growth, development and research in Africa and Diaspora. For orientation, these are some themes of the conference:

• Governance, Health and sustainable development in Africa and Diaspora
• Migration– issues for growth in Africa

• African Diaspora in Canada – issues for work, education and research

Each panel proposal or roundtable proposal should include a panel title and a brief description (300-600 words), the name of the panel organizer(s) and the panel participants. The proposal for oral or poster presentation should include the name(s) and the email address(es) of the (co)author(s), the institutional affiliation(s), the title of the proposed presentation, and an abstract of no more than 200 words. In the event of a co-authored paper, kindly indicate which of the authors will be attending the conference and to whom correspondence should be sent.

Requirements:

  1. Enrolled in an under-graduate, graduate degree programme in a bona fide (i.e. listed in the IAU/UNESCO data base) educational institution at the time of application or recent graduates.
  2. Candidates must specialize in a field relevant to the mission and work of FAO.
  3. Working knowledge of at least one FAO language (Arabic, French, English, Russian or Spanish). Knowledge of a second FAO language will be considered an asset. Only language proficiency certificates from UN accredited external providers and/or FAO language official examinations (LPE, ILE, LRT) will be accepted as proof of the level of knowledge of languages indicated in the online applications.
  4. Be nationals of FAO Member Nations.
  5. Candidates should be aged between 21 and 30.
  6. Candidates should be able to adapt to an international multicultural environment and have good communication skills.
  7. Candidates with family members (defined as brother, sister, mother or father) employed by FAO under any type of contractual arrangement are not eligible for the Internship Programme.
